In June 2017, I started an activity/gathering group with some moms that are also part of the Squamish community. It is not always easy to get out of the routine and explore on our own with young children and I find that the more the merrier, especially when it comes to entertain the kids! I wanted to meet other moms that have interest in doing outdoor activities with their toddlers so we could share ideas for activities and get motivated to actually do it. As of today, the group has reached about 400 members on Facebook and Instagram and we are constantly reaching new families. Every Monday, I find a nice activity to do and I post when and where and whoever is interested in joining in shows up! We meet at different places in Squamish and surrounding areas, to go for nature walks, hikes, bike rides or just explore our beautiful backyard. I have also organized Talks with BC Park Employees to teach children and their parents about nature’s respect and wilderness survival. More and more people are meeting with us every week and I am confident that The Little Explorers can become a Movement!
Now more than ever, there is a need for children to spend more time outside. With the uprising popularity of electronics, and indoor sports and activities, the children of the current generation don’t spend enough time playing outside, in a “Self Reliance” kind of play. I noticed that parents are busier than ever, they don’t necessarily take the time for it, or they simply don’t know where to start if they have never tried it for themselves. Squamish is the home for lots of young families and their children, and there is a lot of outdoor enthusiasts, but finding a balance between children time and parent time is very difficult. I think it’s the perfect time and place for this kind of Organization to work really well and be profitable to the community.
